Abstract

A systematic review was conducted to investigate the properties of group-based parent education programmes for parents with children aged five to eighteen years. Thirty studies were included. Sixty percent followed a quasi-experimental or pre-experimental design. The continents of North America and Asia published the most studies on the subject. The training actions were mainly carried out in educational, health and socio-community contexts, with a usual number of eight sessions, each lasting 120 minutes and held once a week. Most of the interventions targeted parents with psychosocial risk factors or belonging to racial or ethnic minorities. Seventy per cent had no follow-up evaluations. The most recurrent variables with statistically significant pre-post intervention results were parenting and educational styles and practices. The most common content addressed in parenting education programmes was family conflict, as well as techniques to increase appropriate behaviours and to decrease or eradicate inappropriate behaviours. Evidence has been provided to support the use of these interventions as a training and support resource for families in the process of educating and raising children and adolescents. Updated information has also been provided to guide the design of new parental education training actions or to update existing ones.
