The Impact of Emotional Intelligence and Job Satisfaction
On Reducing Burnout in the Healthcare Sector

The healthcare sector, with its high demands and crucial responsibilities, exposes professionals to an increased risk of burnout. This phenomenon, characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a decrease in personal accomplishment, affects not only the well-being of healthcare workers but also the quality of care provided to patients. In this context, emotional intelligence (EI) and job satisfaction play essential roles in mitigating the effects of burnout and strengthening healthcare professionals’engagement.
Emotional intelligence, by allowing better emotional regulation and interpersonal interactions, helps professionals cope with the daily challenges of the sector. Job satisfaction, as a mediator, enhances the positive impact of EI by reducing the effects of stress and burnout on professional engagement. These relationships were explored in the present study, conducted with 181 healthcare professionals in a hospital setting, adopting a positivist and hypothesis-driven approach using structural equation modeling (PLS). The results of this study revealed a direct impact of emotional intelligence on healthcare professionals’burnout, with job satisfaction playing a key role in moderating this effect. These findings highlight the importance of implementing policies that promote the development of emotional intelligence and create work environments conducive to satisfaction, in order to reduce burnout and strengthen healthcare professionals’commitment to their institution.
