Resumo

A Escala de Satisfação com a Vida (SWLS), um instrumento de 5 itens com 7 categorias de resposta por item, mede julgamentos cognitivos de satisfação com a própria vida usando pontuação somativa, onde pontuação mais alta implica maior satisfação com a vida. Pontuações discretas de SWLS usando itens do tipo Likert falham em satisfazer a propriedade equidistante e não consideram distribuições de pontuações de itens ou pontuações de escala. O artigo fornece um método livre de suposições para converter pontuações de itens de SWLS em pontuações contínuas seguindo a distribuição normal e a pontuação da escala é tomada como a soma de tais pontuações de itens normalmente distribuídas. As pontuações propostas evitando empates facilitam uma melhor admissibilidade de agregação aritmética, comparações significativas, ordenação, classificação de indivíduos, avaliação de progresso/deterioração ao longo do tempo e realização de análises estatísticas paramétricas. Além disso, ajuda a avaliar mudanças em sucessivos períodos de tempo para um indivíduo ou um grupo de indivíduos, traçando caminhos de progresso e testando a significância de progresso ou deterioração. A normalidade das pontuações propostas facilita encontrar pontuações equivalentes de várias medidas de satisfação com a vida com diferentes formatos de escala e diferentes faixas de pontuação. A ilustração empírica é dada com dados hipotéticos. O método proposto é recomendado para aprimorar a utilização do SWLS para uma melhor medição da satisfação com a vida, juntamente com comparações e inferências significativas.
