Intangible Cultural Heritage and Gender

The text begins by examining the controversy between the concepts of intangible cultural heritage and ethnographic heritage, defining them before describing each of the characteristics of intangible cultural heritage, highlighting how they are directly linked to the bearers of that heritage. It also reflects on the different areas of development related to gender, as well as the risks and threats to which this type of heritage is currently subject. The second part defines the concept of safeguarding, relating it to the safeguarding actions and programs that must be developed for intangible cultural heritage (ICH). It also highlights the importance of museums in these actions, but not as intangible cultural heritage in and of themselves. The third part of this work assesses and demonstrates how, within the communities that uphold these traditions, spaces for dialogue are opening up, allowing for the gradual incorporation of women into the intangible cultural heritage (ICH) roles traditionally held by men. In the specific case of Castilla-La Mancha, this incorporation of women is developing naturally and progressively in intangible cultural expressions without causing conflict or social tension and without requiring mediation.
